Saving the Results

Most of the results can be saved in files by using the Output Results option under the File menu item. This option becomes accessible only after the calculations are complete. A variety of results can be saved:

  • Input Data
    • X Input Data : for the selected domain only, and with missing values replaced
    • Interpolated X Data : interpolated to the Y locations (only for GCM and PFV)
    • Y Input Data : for the selected domain only, with missing values replaced, and, if appropriate, as seasonal aggregates
    • Y Data Observed Component : as for Y Input Data , but for the observed ("persisted") component of a season (only if a persisted component is selected)
    • Y Data Combined Season : as for Y Input Data , but for the persisted + the predicted components of a season (only if a persisted component is selected)
    • Transformed Y Data : as for Y Input Data , but transformed to a gaussian distribution (only if the transformation option is on)
    • Gamma Parameters : for Y data, as used to transform the data to a gaussian distribution (only if the transformation option is on, and a gamma transformation is selected)
  • Climatologies
    • Thresholds : climatological thresholds for the Y data for defining above- and below-normal
    • Averages : climatological means for the Y data
    • Standard Deivations : climatological standard deviations for the Y data
    • Coefficients of Variation : climatological coefficients of variation for the Y data (only if zero bound is activated
    • Correlations : between the X data and the currently selcted Y variable
    • Correlations : between the X data and the currently selcted Y variable
  • EOF Modes (only if CCA or PCR is used)
    • Eigenvalues : for the X data (if CCA or PCR is used) and for the Y data (if CCA is used)
    • Spatial Loadings : for the X data (if CCA or PCR is used) and for the Y data (if CCA is used); loadings can be saved if index data are used
    • Temporal Scores : for the X data (if CCA or PCR is used) and for the Y data (if CCA is used)
  • CCA Modes (only if CCA is used)
    • Canonical Correlations : between the EOF-filtered X and Y data
    • Homogeneous Covariance Maps : for the X and Y fields
    • Homogeneous Covariance Time-Series : for the X and Y data
  • PCR Results (only if PCR is used)
    • Regression coefficients : between the X and Y data
    • PC Regression coefficients : between the X EOFs and Y data
  • MLR and GCM Results (only if MLR or GCM is used)
    • Regression coefficients : between the X and Y data
  • Hindcasts
    • Hindcasts : cross-validated, double cross-validated, or retroactive out-of-sample estimates of the Y data
    • Fitted Values : within-sample estimates of the Y data
    • Ensemble Hindcasts : double cross-validated or retroactive out-of-sample indications of uncertainty
    • Hindcast Prediction Limits : double cross-validated or retroactive out-of-sample prediction limits
    • Probabilistic Hindcasts : double cross-validated or retroactive out-of-sample probabilities for below-, normal, and above-normal
    • Hindcast Odds : double cross-validated or retroactive out-of-sample odds and relative odds for below-, normal, and above-normal
    • Hindcast Prediction-Error Variances : double cross-validated, or retroactive out-of-sample prediction-error variances
  • Forecasts (only once a forecast has been viewed using one of the Tools ~ Forecast menu items.
    • Forecasts : of Y given new values of X
    • Observed Component : of Y given new values of X (only if a persisted component is selected)
    • Prediced Component : of Y given new values of X (only if a persisted component is selected)
    • Prediction Limits : for Y given new values of X
    • Ensemble Forecasts : for Y as indications of forecast uncertainty
    • Probabilistic Forecasts : for below-, normal, and above-normal
    • Forecast Odds : and relative odds for below-, normal, and above-normal
    • Prediction-Error Variances : for Y given new values of X
    • Principal Component Scores for new values of the predictors in the Forecast (Z) file (only if PCR or CCA is used)
    • Predictor CCA Scores for new values of the predictors in the Forecast (Z) file (only if CCA is used)

Skill maps and verification results can be saved also, but only by right-clicking on the skill-map window, or a verification window. They cannot be saved from the Output Results window because the skill scores and the verification results are available only while the window displaying the results is open.

File names for each of the desired outputs need to be specified. The default output format is tab-separated text files in the latest CPT version format, but binary files, GrADS formats and other formatting options are available from the Edit ~ File formats menu. For the default CPT output, it is possible to suppress the output of the CPT tags using Options ~ Include CPT tags , which has a tick mark if the output of CPT tags is activated. Further details about the output file formats is available from Edit ~ File formats .
